一次去一家国内名气很大的互联网公司，因为和他们的技术总监比较熟，他带我去参观了他们的机房，令我惊讶的是，他们的服务器群固然庞大，但多数配置都比较低，而且用的多是很老的系统，有win2000 ，有Ubuntu 6 ，这些操作系统在我的脑海中似乎已经是古董，在我的想象中，这些互联网大牛们的服务器配置应该是顶级的，服务器系统也应该至少是上一个最新稳定版的，可是事实却不是这样。然而，这个平常得似乎很落伍的配置，并没有阻碍它成为国内呼风唤雨的互联网公司。
认识另外一个人，他小学未毕业，对电脑也不熟，就凭着曾经在一家杂志社打过工经验，有过采访过几个过气的明星的经历，就独身来京闯荡，开始潦倒到连房子都租不起，没钱吃饭，差点流浪街头。为了生存，他为人扫过地、给人发过传单、做过促销，送过快递，期间，每天晚上给一些杂志社、小报撰稿，做自由撰稿人，后来渐渐自己出去采访写稿，策划组织活动。将近十年下来采访了上百位明星、500多名企业领导人，累计发表了百万字文章，组织了大大小小200多场活动，如今年收入已经有了30万。他自己说，自己没什么特别的地方，就是肯干，而且文章写得不错，比较善于捕捉一些社会热点，除此之外与常人无异。
这两件事，都让我印象深刻，一个互联网公司，最重要的是提供独特产品和服务，能看清发展方向，在这个讯息万变的时代，能迅速做出决断，判断和满足用户的需求，这是互联网公司核心竞争力所在，不是什么先进的硬件、不是最新的软件系统，这些说白了这些只不过是工具而已。就是这么简单的道理，我们却常常看不清、想不明白。
而一个人的竞争力，不在于他能掌握多少先进的技术，而在于他能传递出去的独特思想，他解决问题的思路。技术是无穷无尽的,如果我们不是做技术研究的，就要把精力用在技术应用上，我们需要把技术当成实现目标的工具。在这个竞争激烈的社会，我们必须有一项能拿得出手的思想武器，是别人所不能企及或者别人不能看到的，用心把这个优势做强做大，形成我们的核心竞争力。
